So, we originally set out to make a red velvet cupcake (RVC) that met our all-natural standards. I admit that this was overly ambitious considering how much dye is needed to make RVCs so drop-dead-decadent looking. Months ago, I had spotted some all-natural vegetable-based food coloring (red, blue, and yellow) in Sur La Table and made it my mission to use the red one for the RVCs in February. Imagine my dismay when I discovered the coloring was a bright berry-colored pink! I really should’ve suspected that we wouldn’t be able to achieve the rich, burgundy cupcakes of my dreams. But, the good news is that the “Pink Velvet” ones really are pretty and guilt-free – as far as coloring is concerned at least 🙂

The brownie sandwiches we ended up with weren’t what we had set out to do either! Talk about a baking adventure 🙂 Peachie and I had wanted to layer various fillings and chocolates on a brownie. We thought – how hard can this be?! Needless to say, we won’t be asking that question again! I’ll spare you the excruciating details, but taking risks and trying new things can be incredibly freeing and rewarding – but only after you get over the disappointment and despair of the experiments that went before it.
